A car dealership, sometimes called a car dealership system, or local car distribution, is usually a privately held business that sells new or used automobiles at the wholesale retail level, usually via a contract arrangement with the automaker or its authorized sales division. It may also carry a complete range of Certified Preowned vehicles. It employs qualified auto salespeople to sell the cars.

There are many car dealerships which have their own showrooms. In these cases, there will often be a number of vehicles which are listed for sale and some potential buyers will be able to physically examine the cars prior to being able to make orders. Many times the Automobile Association of America (AAA) will conduct trade shows where a wide selection of new vehicles will be available for examination. The showroom can offer many benefits such as allowing more competition among selling vehicles, having a large display of newer models, and having more methods for making follow-up sales.

However, many car dealerships that are considered to be in the mainstream may only carry a limited amount of inventory and their inventories may be limited because they do not own a showroom. Car dealerships with showrooms are commonly referred to as dealerships although they could also be car dealerships that simply rent out space from another establishment. In some cases, a car dealer will own a series of franchised stores all over the country and will only have locations that carry the brand name of the automaker. In this case, a customer would need to obtain a Dealer's License in order to purchase vehicles from these locations.

It is important to note that even some car dealerships which are referred to as dealership still exist today but as a small percentage of the total number of car dealers. This means that there are still millions of privately owned cars available to the general public. Private auto sales are still very high despite the fact that the economy has suffered tremendously on the whole. Some people may have saved up for years in order to afford a car and due to a slow economy have not been able to do so.

So the question still remains, "Do car dealerships still exist in the future?". It is important to keep in mind that not all dealers still sell new cars and others may only rent out used cars in an effort to save money. There is no evidence to suggest that the current economic downturn will cause an end to the leasing industry and some companies such as car dealerships in New Bern NC find it quite profitable during slow periods. In short, there is absolutely no evidence suggesting that car dealerships will no longer exist in the future as a large portion of the population still owns at least one vehicle and likely more. The future may hold many surprises but as long as people have cars they will likely continue to have car dealerships, albeit a smaller one.

The secret to selling cars is in how you advertise and publicize your car dealership. If you take the time to properly build your showroom and properly display your vehicles, you will be surprised at just how good of an effect it can have on the overall sale of cars. Showrooms can be a great way to attract customers and even offer free financing if you get enough people to come to your showroom. It is also important to remember that even small showrooms can greatly affect the overall profitability of your business and therefore, having a successful dealership does not come overnight.
